Portimão, happy to be here again. I always come back to the largest city in the western Algarve. This time, I was there in late October. The weather was just unbelievable: daytime temperatures around 26 degrees and the water temperature still at 20 degrees. Just great! I was very surprised that I found only a few tourists.
There were a few cruise ship tourists in the city in the short term and quite some local tourist. This time I did a bike tour through this beautiful coastal town with the great beaches. More about it - later.
Below you can see the tour I did with the bike (link of the bike tour). I can recommend this to anyone as Portimão has great bike paths. Starting at the lighthouse on the Praia da Rocha, continue directly on the beach and along the rocky coast, where you can stop at any time and take ingenious photos. Bicycles can be rented at SunBikeTours Algarve.
The famous beach "Praia da Rocha", the "beach house", with its ocher-colored rock formations is simply a hit. A beautiful beach with small caves and grottoes to discover. There are many wooden stairs leading from the shopping street down to the beach. There are several cafes, restaurants and many opportunities for sports activities.
Praia dos Três Castelos: This beautiful stretch of beach is basically an extension of Praia da Rocha. From the rocks above you have a fantastic view over the entire beach. A staircase, quite steep, leads down to the beach. If the water level is low and the sea is calm, you can also reach this beach from Praia da Rocha through two natural "tunnels". Also an artificially constructed tunnel, directly at the stairs, connects the two beaches. Here you can really enjoy the sunset.
Praia dos Careanos: The beach is not too long and is practically an extension of the other beaches on this coast. An imposing small tunnel that leads through the rock, tempts to swim there or take a long walk. The view from the rugged cliff coast is an experience at sunset.
But now to my favorite beach Praia do Vau, with the favorite hotel and in my opinion the best Portuguese restaurant on the beaches in Portimão. There, were the grandma still cooks the great dishes from the Algarve. Just delicious!
Crawfish Cataplana with my friend Sheetal on the beach in the "Restaurante Os Costas".
Hotel Jardim do Vau: A great hotel where I have already spent my vacation three times. There are often great bargains at great prices. Just to recommend (Link Hotel). On the photo below right you can also see my favorite restaurant on the beach.
On my travels I buy tickets and tours at GetyourGuide
From the Fortress "Forte Santa Catarina" you have a great view of the "Praia da Rocha", the harbour entrance and the marina. On the way to the beach are some steps to cope, and you're on the beach with the great beach bars.
View of the marina. Portimão has much calmer waters than the western Atlantic coast, making it a great place for sailing. That's why the "World Match Racing Tour" takes place here every year.
The harbor entrance to the marina. A great view, especially in the morning, when the fishing boats come home with the catch.
In the old town at the highest point of Portimão you will find the church Nossa Senhora da Conceição. The gothic-style church is decorated with azulejos - paintings of blue ceramic tiles. On Sundays, this Catholic church is very well attended. The church is worth seeing.
The Museu de Portimão is housed in a restored 19th century cannery and exhibits regional history exhibits. I could hardly believe it when I was told that this was a sardine cannery. Ingenuity is needed. Well done!
On the next visit to the Algarve I recommend these activities, just great and at an affordable price!
